What’s Good?

Hello! I’m now doing my Surgery rotation wherein our call time is earlier than usual at 6:15 am every day.

Despite my perpetual struggle with poor sleeping habits and alarm clocks, I actually LIKE having to go to the hospital that early. We get to do our chart rounds and patient endorsements before 8 am, and sometimes we even have time for a quick breakfast as a group before we assume our posts for the day.

Today we didn’t have that though, because after around 30 minutes of trying to book a ride to the hospital, I got a text that said classes and work in Manila have been suspended for the day due to the weather.

HHHYYEESS!! Usually it’s only the clerks who benefit from cancellation of “classes”, because interns and residents are no longer students. I’m so glad I don’t have to do anesthesia clearance today. <3

So far, so good. I have already changed back into my pajamas, finished my morning cup of coffee, watched one episode of This Is Us, and I’m now ready to post this blog update. I figured I should do more of this instead of tweeting in threads and posting “TLDR” captions on Instagram.

(I finally know what TLDR means after someone commented it on one of my posts. Umm thanks!)

Feeling Domesticated

Life update!

It’s been three weeks since I started my Community Medicine rotation. That means I have no overnight shifts at the hospital, and I have all my weekends off. Most days I even get to go home by lunch time!

So what have I been doing with all this free time?

I’ve been attempting to study and shoot and edit videos in advance so I can have time to study, but most of my time are actually eaten up by..


The Countdown Begins – Two Weeks To Go!

Life update! We have two weeks left before internship begins. I believe this is the last summer vacation of my entire life! Yes, of my extended student life where at 24 I still enjoy summer vacations.

So this is what I’ve been up to so far:

I started watching Game of Thrones! I’m on my yoga mat because I like to do exercises while watching. I pride myself in my attempts of planking during the opening credits, and picking up my pink weights every time a Daenerys scene is on.

Pretty good excuse for not going to the gym for more than a week, eh?

One time, I only went there for the free coffee. That was the afternoon I found out my favorite Youtube artist Christina Grimmie had been shot. I was on Twitter for more than an hour, refreshing for updates, until the worst confirmation came. She was just living her dream and doing what she loved. Thank you, Christina.

Anyway, I’ve been staying at home for days I’m afraid our dogs will me so much when I go back to the hospital. I honestly can’t wait to be back. There are still a few things I promised I would do that I haven’t worked on yet because hehe Game of Thrones. We’ll see.

P.S. The countdown also holds true for our incoming president Duterte!

Duterte Leni 2016: One With The Masses

This is the first and only post I am writing about the recent national elections, and hopefully one of the last ones you’ll have to read. Despite the negativity, conspiracies, and opposing views from even my closest friends, I chose Duterte and Leni.

It turns out, I was one with the masses. I really should have no more explaining to do.

May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears. Duterte Leni 2016.

When I look back at this season in my life, this is what I want to remember.

A Vote For Political Will

I know that words are just words. I myself have uttered flowery scripts in student council elections, perfected down to intonation. I always won, but those words did me no good when things got tough and no one else could see.

So I know what Duterte meant when he said, “You need someone in Malacanang to just do it.

But from time to time, you allow words to affect you. You come across someone inspired enough to exclaim “excited na akong manalo“, and you see yourself in that person.

I know the feeling, Leni. And so I believe you, and I voted for you too.

They say that the presidency is really destiny. I believe that now.

You can be born into it, groomed and educated to play the part, and have a long list of achievements to prove your worth, but still lose to unexpected cards who claim to have never wanted it in the first place.

I have always hoped that in this lifetime, we will have a well-loved president that we can happily tell our grandchildren about, and a vice-president that we would desperately urge to serve another six years in the next highest post.

Good Habits and Small Wins

So here’s a random life update because I woke up at 5 am and I didn’t want to go back to sleep. I keep on forgetting how much I love mornings. I’m a morning person. Med school may have forced me to be a night owl – always up studying or manning the emergency room – but again, I know I’m a morning person.

I’m struggling with my messed up sleeping habits though. I guess I love mornings way too much that I end up WAITING for it. I can stay up well until 5, 6, 7, or even 8 am! 8 am, my goodness. I blame it on the cuteness of It’s Judy’s Life, the “vacation-mode” feeling of playing The Sims 4, and the million books I have yet to read on Kindle.

The last one I started reading and finished overnight was Suicide Med by Freida McFadden, which I downloaded from Amazon for just $2.99. Obviously a page-turner. Check it out.

My first fictional book about medicine! I really enjoyed it. Next up – “The House of God” by Samuel Shen. Any other recommendations? 🙂

I think it’s all about forming good habits though. I realized that from reading “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, which is so honestly life-changing hahaha. My key takeaway from the book is what I’ve learned about keystone habits.

Keystone habits offer what is known within academic literature as “small wins“. They help other habits to flourish by creating new structures, and they establish cultures where change becomes contagious.

So, about that. I could make it a habit to go to the gym. Well, I should. That’s my number one motivation right now – the hefty monthly bill that I have to make “sulit”. Hahaha. Eventually, I’m sure I’ll be motivated by the happy endorphins I get after each cardio session with the elliptical, and the “I’m so zen” mindset I claim after each yoga and pilates class.

Pero pag ako talaga nagka-abs…. hu u.

But I can’t make it to the gym if I’m knock out sleeping in until 5 pm. So I guess it’s all about establishing a solid night routine and sleeping early. I have  two more months to establish this.

To more productive days ahead! 🙂
